« Gated Communities USA Introduces RedTail Mountain in Mountain City Tennessee   Use Golf Carts For So Much More »

by Mark Walters

Golf equipment has changed over the years and the way we play golf has altered as well. The long-established iron set is virtually dead, as most iron manufacturers now sell sets that start from the 4 or even 5-irons in answer to the most iron sets now start at the 4 or even 5 irons in recognition of the increasing popularity of hybrid clubs among the majority of players. For the majority of club golfers, hybrids are easier to hit than long and medium irons, so the trend is well founded.

Driver dimensions are regulated by the USGA and R…A size limits. For conforming drivers that limit is 460 cc and most club golfers would do well to play to that limit. If your driving is inconsistent, playing a bigger driver will definitely help. High moment of inertia and more stable weight distribution means modern drivers are far more reliable, even on bad swings. Miss-hit a 460 cc driver and you won’t suffer as much in distance and accuracy.

As with all clubs, the shaft is the engine of your driver. Play a driver with a shaft that doesn’t fit your swing and you’ll struggle to find any accuracy or distance. Most common faults can be reduced or even eliminated simply by playing the right shafts. Troubled by a slice, a softer shaft might do the trick. A lot of golfers struggle with getting any height on their drives. Shafts with softer tips could well be the solution to that problem. Your driving will get better if you match your driver shaft characteristics to your swing speed. If you don’t know how fast you swing the club, nearly all shaft ratings will incorporate a carry approximation for calculating the best flex fit. Check the flex rating for various shafts and go for one that corresponds to your average carry distances.

Sales of hybrid clubs are now outpacing sales of fairway woods by almost double. If you struggle with inconsistency with your long irons, some easy-to-hit hybrids might be your best decision. Easy to hit and very versatile from all kind of lie, hybrid clubs can be played off the tee, the fairway and even from the rough. Hybrids are designed to launch the ball high and land it soft, so most shaft companies are selling specialty shafts built with this in mind.

In irons, the choices are even bigger. Modern iron design can help the majority of common faults in golf. Offset irons to minimize the slice, wider soles on irons can reduce the fat shot and get much needed height on the ball for many. Take a good look at the irons you play. If their design isn’t helping your weak points, then it’s in all probability time for an upgrade.

The short game is where you make your scores and that offers lots of options as well. Forgiving wedge designs mean you don’t have to make any compromises with your wedge play anymore. If you have difficulty playing little flop-shots then high lofted wedges are there to help. If your bunker play is erratic, an easy to hit hollow sand wedge might be the best answer. These are super game improvement wedges and almost impossible to miss-hit or shank.

Relaxed equipment rules have given us some pretty remarkable looking putter designs. Bizarre looking, but forgiving. If your putting is letting you down, a more forgiving putter design may well be the best decision. Closing the putter too much towards the hole? You probably miss a lot of putts to the left (for a right handed golfer) and a face balanced mallet could well be the answer to your putting woes.

Choosing the right golf clubs for your game is about playing clubs that make the most of your strong points and reduce your weaknesses. It needn’t be an expensive exercise. The component market offers some very high quality clubs to choose from. Plus your component clubs will be custom built for you which is the best way to play the right golf clubs for your game.
