If you are an avid golf fan and have watched the pros at work then I am sure you have wondered how in the heck they are able to hit the ball so far with accuracy. The secret is in the golf swing plane. Simply put, having a good swing plane means you will be able to hit the ball further with greater accuracy.
Picture Tiger Woods golf swing. Golfers obsession with the perfect golf swing plane started with Ben Hogan who popularized the concept.
Before I get to the good stuff here are the basics.
The golf swing plane consists of 3 parts
1. The back swing – That is when you draw the golf club behind your shoulders getting ready to swing down and forward in order to take the shot and strike the ball
2. Downswing – bringing the club down from your shoulders in order to hit the ball
3. The follow through
A golf players golf swing plane represents the path upon which the golf club must travel during a golf swing in order to achieve accurate, strong and consistent shots. How much the player bends forward from the hips will determine whether their golf plane will be steeper or flatter which is also influenced by posture.
In order to visualize the golf swing plane, picture yourself standing over the golf ball like you normally would with club in hand ready to take a shot. Now imagine a diagonal line beginning at the ball and extending up towards you and extending above and behind you.
The proper swing would consist of drawing the club back and keeping it parallel to the imaginary diagonal line and stopping when the club head is above your right shoulder(if you’re right handed) then bringing it back down the same path in order to strike the ball and finally bringing it back to the top to follow through after striking the ball.
Grip, aim, stance and posture should also be taken into consideration in addition to the above in order to achieve the perfect golf shot.
Here are 5 Tips to fix your golf swing
1. In order to swing in a proper plane, adopt the proper stance ” body weight evenly distributed on the balls of the feet, arms vertical and hands low, slight bend at the hips, back straight, chin up and aim with your body. The goal is to hit the ball dead center.
2. Keep your eyes on the ball and your head still
3. Bring the club back until it’s behind you
4. The shaft of the golf club should be behind you directly across your shoulders
5. If the club is way over your shoulder your swing plane is too steep and if its too low by your elbows then its too flat. However, consistent practice will reveal which swing plane is better for you
6. Repeat until you feel comfortable
There’s More To Achieving The Perfect Golf Shot…
Other factors to consider besides the basic tips described above are whether the 1 plane golf swing will work for you or the 2 swing plane and how do you know which one to use? You must also learn how to have the perfect grip, correct body alignment, right way to backswing, downswing and follow through and other fundamentals
and quickly learning to lower your handicap by 7 strokes or more, adding distance to your drives, how to use golf swing analyzer software, practice drills and more
