by Greg E. Johnson

Having a great golf swing will make you the envy of golfers you meet on the course and at the range. Swinging a golf club and hitting the exact shot you intended can give you a rush like no other sport. Taking the time to work out kinks in your swing will help you to approach a fundamentally sound swing everyone would be proud to call their own. By regularly checking your swing for common errors, you can get rid of many golf swing headaches.

There is a three-step process to swinging a golf club. First the back swing, second the forward swing, and lastly the follow through. Examining each of these parts will help eliminate the usual problems many golfers encounter.

As you start the backward motion or back swing, keep the club head close to the ground. You can keep from bringing the club head off the ground too rapidly by verifying your arms are fully elongated during the beginning of your backward motion. Flexing the calf muscles along with concentrating on the ball will help ensure you retain the appropriate posture as your body weight shifts to your right-foot.

The second part of your swing is the forward motion. Your body-weight will shift from your back foot to your front foot while at the same time smoothly bringing the club head forward in a clock-like motion increasing its velocity as it approaches the ball. At the moment of impact, the greatest part of your body-weight will be on your front foot and at this point you will commence your follow through.

Please place importance on the follow thru portion of the swing. All too often the follow thru is mishandled and written off as negligible. At the conclusion of your full swing motion, your body should be facing your intended target. Also, your right foot should be turned such that your right big-toe is helping to balance the weight of your body.

Watching yourself in the mirror as you try out each individual part of the golf swing will help out a great deal. After having practiced each part, try the full golf swing while paying careful attention to maintaining posture, keeping the club head close to the ground and shifting body weight from one foot to the other.

Be sure to pick up a shag bag and dedicate yourself to consistent practice. Adjusting to your swing changes may take some time, but it is well worth the effort if it provides your golf game with more consistent play. Swinging a golf club will seem much more natural and easy once you’ve worked out some of the kinks.

Provided you have given enough effort, you will be rewarded with a more uniform and harmonious golf swing. You will begin to notice your golf game enter a new higher class of play. Soon all your golf buddies will be asking you how to swing a golf club.
