A student must understand two key fundamentals in their golf swing lesson, in order to achieve a great technique. These are rhythm and balance. To improve your game you must master these two elements as though they are second nature. When you can control both of these, your self-belief and consistency will increase greatly. The ability to repeat the same action on a consistent basis and with the same speed, is what defines rhythm. During each stage of the stroke, from teeing up to completion, maintaining stability is what defines balance.

Watching professional players as often as possible is a really useful way to learn how they develop their own personal golf swing technique. Often, they go through a similar set number of steps so they have the correct mind-set for the shot. With visualisation, the sports psychologists focus the student on ’seeing’ the perfect shot in advance to help them create poise and balance. This helps the student approach the set-up for the, shot knowing what they want to achieve in advance.

To master the correct technique for the golf swing, it is important not to make the mistake of over-swinging. To achieve a longer distance shot, it is sometimes believed that a longer arc of the club and a greater speed of follow through is necessary. This often results in a poor club/ ball connection due to the wrong position of the face of the club at impact. To achieve distance, it is the time that the ball is in contact with the club that is also very important, not just the speed of the club-head. The focus, initially, should be on not taking the club back more than you can rotate your shoulders. The goal of distance will come in time when these fundamentals are in place.

A daily practice schedule should help in the achievement of pleasing results. The muscles will also strengthen with this training, with wider stretch and better overall control. Also, it is useful not to forget that there is a large number of e-books, videos and tutorials which can provide new techniques, ideas and inspiration. It may be a good idea to book a golf swing lesson with a local professional when some of this theory and practice is established. In time, you will feel more in control of your game and be able to correct your golf swing with analysis giving you more independence.

Lastly, before any practice game or lesson, always remember to warm-up and stretch properly. This will help protect you from any injury and also warm up key muscle groups that will help make your golf swing more relaxed.
