Most people know that you need to exercise to maintain good physical health, however numerous people simply have no desire to exercise. You may hear that the reasons are often that they have no time to exercise or it is too much hassle trying to find something that is interesting, and not boring. Then again, there are also people that are mindful of the ever increasing number of obese or overweight people and they don’t want to become like that, so they know that they should do some form of exercise.

Most people do not like the idea of just doing exercise in order to get fit. So they start thinking about a sport to start to keep in shape, but if you are middle aged or a senior, you can’t be considering taking up triathlons or rugby. Golf, though, is a sport that can cater to those both young and old, and male or female.

Taking up the Sport of Golf to Get Fit

Golf, as a sport, is quite easy to get started in the sense that you don’t have to train for months to start – as in a marathon. After you have begun to play golf, you will discover that it is very entertaining and fun. This is the missing key to actually getting up and doing some exercise, because when you like what you are doing, you will be amazed at how often you look for excuses to play. This is why golf has emerged as a sport that provides numerous previously inactive folk with a good justification to go out and begin to exercise.

In the Beginning

In the beginning it is better to start playing shorter rounds of golf, like 9-hole courses, until you can advance your general physical abilities to allow you to be able to handle the physical requirements for a full’-holes. Because we are talking about golf as a sport, we have to reject the use of golf carts because this takes away the benefits of golf to get fit. This means that it is required to have the physical strength to be able to walk the complete golf course before you can think about playing a round of golf. You may discover that for your first rounds you can only play a handful of the holes. This may seem discouraging but by constantly playing, you will be able to increase your stamina and strength to allow you to walk and golf all of the holes.

Building Up Your Fitness Level

In general, golf is quite a good sport for permitting you to slowly break into an exercise schedule. When you first start golf you will be taking golf lessons which will allow you to start off gradually by working on your golfswing. You will be developing your flexibility and golf muscles at the same time you practice your golf swing.

Even though some individuals say that you can play golf when you are unfit or over-weight, this is not true. True, you could ride around in a golf cart and get out to take a rigid swing to hit your golf ball along the fairway a little distance at a time, but this is not golf. If you are at all serious about improving your fitness through golfing, you will want to ultimately play golf proficiently. After you are able to shoot a few pars and birdies, you will want to work on your fitness and flexibility so that you can get even better.

If you take pleasure in playing golf then you will not mind getting up early to go to the golf course. If you want to take your game to a higher level, you will not mind putting in the effort to exercise your golf specific muscles and a flexibility routine to improve your limberness. Once you are passionate about golf you will discover that because you want to improve your golf swing you will additionally be working on getting fit for golf and keeping fit.
