The 30 Yard Drive- Are Those 30 Yards Really Important?
Posted by Mitch Durkin in Golf Books
I love going to the golf course. You see golfer after golfer handing over cash to get their wired yellow bucket with their trusty golf balls. The crash of the balls as they fall into their own bucketwith the typical two left over at the end that drop to the cement as you jump to catch them. Ahhdont you love the golf course!
We march down like ants, inspecting each stall to see if that feeling is there. You know- that feeling that this is the right stall. We try to find the rubber tee that feels right too, somehow thinking that this will make the perfect game for us. We un-mount our bags, grab the driver and start our golf day. Well- this is what the garden variety of golfer does anyway.
So after a couple swings to warm up, we grab a ball, put it on the tee and WHAP! There we go with the intention of hitting the ball as far as it will go. Were shooting for that 30 yard drive again. Does this sound familiar?
We are all guilty of jumping right into the 30-yard mindset and swinging as hard as we possibly can. We want that long drive. We want to impress our friends. Lets face it, were all human and we buy what the marketing giants tell us. They claim that the goal of a great golf game is that 30 yard drive. But, my fellow golfers, as we seed after the elusive long ball, we lose our balance and begin to play our game off our egowhich is the opposite of what anyone should be doing if they truly want to shoot great golf game.
Now dont get me wrong, hitting a long drive has its advantages.but if you can only control it some of the time (the swing technique for a 300-yard drive is NOT EASY..and is prone to tons of errors)whats the point?
In the end, I suggest everyone focus on control when driving the ball. Length and speed will come with practice. This is not a quick fix method thats promoted by the media. This is a committed golfers mentality. You will find your ball in the fairway, you will have clean approaches to the green and you will start shooting lower scores.
