« Get a Good Golf Grip With These Free Golf Tips For Beginners A History Lesson About Golf »
You know the drill, someone standing on the tee with their brand spanking new 460cc driver that they saw Tiger Woods using at the Masters. As the round progresses the frustration of not being able to strike the driver properly means that a good round of golf is wasted due to the fact that people struggle when it comes to being able to play properly with a low percentage driver. So here are a few little tips that I hope will help you hit a golf ball with that driver:
1. Your tee height is the perfect example of one of the things that will have changed from your old club. The tee needs to present the ball with around one third showing over the top of the club. This compensates for the higher face of the club and the slightly different angle of the club head. If you use a longer tee try and get one of the new plastic ones that doesn’t scratch your new club. (Scratches are unavoidable but there are tee’s that will not scratch as much.)
2. Align the writing on the ball with the location you want the ball to end up. One of the major problems with higher handicap players is when they line up their longer shots they are pointing in the wrong direction. Most modern golf balls have writing down the side telling you how the distance is max or high velocity (unless you are Tiger Woods then it says “Tiger” and that is a man that really knows how to hit a golf ball) Line this writing up to the point you want to aim. That way when you align your club face with the ball you will be able to see that you have an perfect -| to look down. Follow that line down the fairway make sure its going where you want it to go and pull the trigger.
3. Lining your feet up correctly in conjunction with the ball is also very important. Before with the older clubs it was advisable to have the ball aligned with your heel now it is much closer to your big toe tip. The only way to get this completely right is to practice at the range. Once you get in a comfortable position and you are striking the ball well, straight and long, you will be know that this is the position for you and you can address the ball fairly quickly in the future.
4. Strike the ball as the swing enters into the up rather than other clubs where you strike the ball either on the downswing or at the bottom of the swing. This is due to the very abrupt angle of the club faces on the new drivers. By changing the ball address as we did in step three it is now further forward in your stance and this means that you do not really need to adjust your swing as you are now aiming to strike the ball after the main apex of the swing.
From these steps you will notice that you are hitting the ball farther than you were with your last driver. The reason is due to a low spin rate on the ball and a higher launch angle. This is just one of the how to hit a golf ball methods that I use.
